Summer Reading: Ours and Yours!

Going on vacation this summer? Whether it's an exciting jaunt to the Antipodes, a long weekend at the beach, or a relaxing stay-cation spent puttering around your hobbit hole, chances are that (as you're stopping by at the Penguin site) you will be bringing a book. Or, if you're like us, twelve!

Here, the Ace and Roc editorial staff share their picks for summer reading that won't disappoint. These are the tomes, both old and new, that we plan to pack this summer as we curl up in Central Park/ hang ten at the Jersey Shore/ hunt electric eels in South America (that Ginjer!).

Susan Allison: I'd like to recommend Spindle's End by Robin McKinley. This retelling of "The Sleeping Beauty" is full of delicious twists on the traditional tale, and McKinley's prose is as pitch-perfect as ever, with the humor she gets too little credit for. The ending will surprise you, and right after it surprises you, you'll realize it was the only possible ending.

Ginjer Buchanan: I'll be re-reading Jack McDevitt's A Talent For War. It was Jack's second novel and the first in his "Alex Benedict" series. I think it's the book on his backlist that is most overlooked.

Cameron Dufty: I plan to read Dead To Me by Anton Strout. Word on the street is that it's full of zing-tastic humor, and also zombies. Zombies kill me, every time.

Anne Sowards: I have re-read Anne Bishop's work many times—her novels are dark and sensual; they turn conventions on their ear, and they always entertain me. If you're looking for a book that's hard to put down, you can't go wrong with Daughter Of The Blood, the first of her Black Jewels novels.

Danielle Stockley: While I'm lazing by the pool this summer, I'll be re-reading Nick Sagan's Idlewild, which is about a group of young people living in an intricate virtual world of their own creation. And murder! Oh, who am I kidding? I live in New York City—there will be no lazing. When will science finally create the virtual pool?

Jessica Wade: I'll be re-reading The Anubis Gates by the inimitable Tim Powers. It's a brilliant, mostly-historical novel full of Egyptian magic, time travel, Romantic poets, and maybe the cleverest plot I've ever come across. I'm also dying to get to Darkborn by Alison Sinclair and Midnight Alley, the third book in Rachel Caine's totally fantastic "Morganville Vampires" series.
