Dear Reader,
It is both an incredible pleasure and an incredible challenge to write a series featuring the same couple as protagonists.
I find it infinitely compelling to explore Raphael and Elena's developing relationship, to see how a being of such power as an archangel, loves, and how he will adapt (or not) to a relationship. He's had centuries to grow into his arrogance—and now he finds himself bound to a woman with a mortal heart, a warrior who will not allow him to shield her from the lethal dangers of their world.
On the flip side, Elena's journey from mortal to immortal is as difficult as it is fascinating. It's not every day a woman becomes consort to an archangel—and even though Elena is a strong woman, one used to fighting for what she needs, this is a challenge for which no preparation would ever be enough.
So, in many ways, though Raphael is unquestionably more powerful, they are both in the same situation when it comes to their relationship. Neither one has the advantage as they navigate these unknown waters, and that I think is what makes their relationship work—any mistakes they make, are made together.
However, in Archangel's Consort, it isn't only their growing relationship that Elena and Raphael have to deal with, but also their pasts. We learned of the stark horror that ended Elena's childhood in Archangel's Kiss, but there is still so much we don't know about her, including all the facets of her tangled relationship with her father, Jeffrey.
We know even less about Raphael's past, and I think in many ways, Archangel's Consort is his book. We begin to see the forces that shaped him, influenced him, made him the ruthless being he is today. Caliane, his mother, was a powerful force in his life—but she wasn't the only one. His father, too, played a part, as did a hauntingly lovely angel called the Hummingbird.
In Archangel's Consort, the past collides with the present for both Elena and Raphael. Secrets are spoken and nightmares are awakened, but no matter the outside factors, in the end, the central core of this story is the relationship between Elena and Raphael—a relationship that is dangerous, demanding, and yet utterly beautiful.
I hope you enjoy returning to the Guild Hunter world in Archangel's Consort, and to the continuing story of Elena and her archangel.
