Charles Dickens' most beloved story, "A Christmas Carol," is as much a part of Christmas as mistletoe and carolers. The story begins on Christmas Eve as Scrooge sits in his house with not a kind word for anyone; he just wants to be left alone until the "humbug" of Christmas is over. But four ghostly visitors—his former business partner, followed by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come—show him the error of his ways, and by the time Christmas Day dawns, Scrooge is a changed person.

about the AUTHOR Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was born in England on February 7, 1812. Brought up in a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know hunger, privation, and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy afforded Dickens formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his writing brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. He died in 1870 and is known as one of the grand masters of Victorian literature.
