OFFICIAL RULES FOR THE WE BEAT THE STREET SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Open in the continental U.S. to students in grades 12 (high school seniors).
How to Enter:
- To Enter the We Beat the Street Scholarship Contest ("Contest") each contestant must submit an essay consisting of no less than
1,000 words and no more than 1,500 words stating their personal experiences in overcoming adversity in order to reach their goals.
Please type your essay (no handwritten essays allowed) and send it, along with your name, address, telephone number, the name of the
school you currently attend, your grade level, school address, and school phone number to Penguin Young Readers Group, 345 Hudson St.,
New York, NY 10014, Attn: We Beat the Street contest. To be eligible, all entries must be postmarked by April 15, 2007.
- Entries are void if they are in whole or in part illegible, incomplete or damaged. No responsibility is assumed for late,
lost, damaged, postage due or misdirected mail entries.
- All entries become the sole property of Penguin Young Readers Group and will not be returned. By entering, contestants agree
to abide by these rules, and represent and warrant that their entries are their original works, do not violate the rights of any third
party, and grant to Sponsor the right to edit, publish, promote and otherwise use of their entries and essays without further permission,
notice or compensation. Moreover, this is a non-fiction contest and the events described in the essay must be true and must reflect the
actual events of entrant's own life.
Judging:
- On or about May 15, 2007, all eligible entries received will be judged by an independent, qualified panel of judges selected by Sponsors.
- Entries will be judged based upon content (75%) and writing (25%). The decisions of the judges and Sponsor with respect to the
selection of the winners, and in regard to all matters relating to this Contest, shall be final.
- Winners will be notified by the telephone and mail.
Prizes:
- GRAND PRIZE: The grand prize winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship towards an accredited 2-year or 4-year college/university
or vocational school of the winner's choice, a 30-minute conference call from one or all three of the doctors (dependant on winner's and
doctor's availability) and one signed copy of We Beat the Street. (Approximate Retail Value ("ARV")= $2,000
- FIRST PRIZE: Two first prize winners will each receive $500 scholarship towards an accredited 2-year or 4-year college/university
or vocational school of the winner's choice, plus a signed copy of We Beat the Street. (ARV per winner = $516)
- Winning essays may be posted on the Penguin Young Readers Group website and/or that of the Three Doctors www.threedoctors.com upon
permission of winners.
- Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received. In the event that there is an insufficient number of qualified
entries Sponsor reserves the right not to award the prizes.
Eligibility:
This contest is open in the continental U.S. to students in grades twelve who are legal U.S. residents. Void where prohibited by law.
General:
- Employees and their immediate family members living in the same household, of Sponsor, their parents, subsidiaries or affiliated companies,
or the agencies of any of them are not eligible for this Contest.
- No cash substitution, transfers or assignments of prizes allowed. In event of unavailability, Sponsor may substitute a prize of
equal or greater value.
- Scholarship money will be paid directly to the Grand prize and first place winner's college/ university or vocational school of choice.
All winners must provide official documentation of their acceptance from the college/university/vocational school before any prize money can be
awarded.
- All expenses, including taxes, (if any) on receipt and use of prizes are the sole responsibility of the winners.
- Winners, and/or their parents or legal guardians, will be required to execute an affidavit of eligibility and release, including copyright
assignment for their essays, which must be returned within fourteen days (14) of notification or another winner will be selected.
- By accepting the prize the winners grant to Sponsor the right to use their names, likenesses, hometowns, biographical information and
essays in advertising and promotional materials, including posting on Sponsor's websites, without further compensation or permission, except
where prohibited by law.
- By accepting the prize, winners, and/or their parents or legal guardians, release Sponsor, subsidiaries, affiliates, parent companies
and Three Doctors, from any liability, injuries, damages, cost or expense, including reasonable attorney's fees, arising out of or in relation
to participation in this Contest or the acceptance, use or misuse of the prize.
- Any dispute arising from this Contest will be determined according to the laws of the State of New York, without reference to its conflict
of law principles, and the entrants consent to the personal jurisdiction of the State and Federal Courts located in New York County and agree
that such courts have exclusive jurisdiction over all such disputes.
