The Write Like Mike contest

Acclaimed sportswriter Mike Lupica has high scores with his new book series about kids who blow the game wide open both on and off the field.

One grand prize winner will have his or her sports column featured in Sports Illustrated Kids magazine, $1000 worth of sports equipment donated to their school, and their name written into a future Comeback Kid novel!

OFFICIAL RULES FOR THE Comeback Kids "Write Like Mike" contest

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. A PURCHASE WILL NOT ENHANCE YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO WIN.

Open to full-time matriculated students, ages 8-12, who are attending schools located in the United States.

How to Enter:

  1. To enter the Comeback Kids "Write like Mike" contest, (the "Contest"), submit a typed or printed sports column about a national or local sporting event. Submissions should not exceed 250 words and should be submitted via U.S. Mail only to Penguin Young Readers Group Marketing Department, Penguin Group (USA) Inc., 345 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10014. Limit one entry per person. Each submission must be accompanied by a completed entry form that can be obtained from the Penguin Young Readers website (www.penguin.com/youngreaders) or from your local bookstore.
  2. To be eligible, all entries must be postmarked by November 12, 2007 and received on or by November 16, 2007. Submissions by fax, e-mail, disc or any other electronic means will not be considered
  3. Entries will not be returned. By entering the Contest, contestants agree to abide by these rules, and represent and warrant that the entries are their own and original creations, and do not violate or infringe the rights, including, without limitation, copyrights, trademark rights or rights of publicity/privacy, of any third party.
  4. Entries are void if they are in whole or in part illegible, incomplete, or damaged. No responsibility is assumed for late, lost, damaged, incomplete, illegible, postage due or misdirected mail entries. Penguin Group (USA) Inc. ("Sponsor") and its parent, subsidiary or affiliated companies are not responsible for technical malfunctions of any kind which may limit the ability to participate, or by any human error which may occur in the processing of the entries. If for any reason the Contest is not capable of being conducted as described in these rules, Sponsor shall have the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest.
Judging:
All eligible entries received will be judged by a qualified panel of judges chosen by Sponsor and winner will be selected on or about November 30, 2007. Submissions will be judged on style, content, grammar and originality. Judges will look for clear, concise writing that is original, articulate, logically organized and well-supported. Winner will be notified by December 7, 2007 via telephone or U.S. mail.
Prizes:
  1. One Grand Prize winner will have his or her sports column published in a custom advertorial in a to be determined Spring 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated Kids magazine. The sports column will also be featured on the Penguin Young Readers Group website and the Walden Media website. Winner's first name will be used as a character in a future book in Mike Lupica's Comeback Kids book series. The Physical Education Department of the winner's school will receive one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) to be used toward the purchase of sports equipment of its choice. (Total Approximate Retail Value ("ARV") = $1,000.00).
  2. In the event that there is an insufficient number of qualified entries or if the judges determine in their absolute discretion that no or too few entries meet the quality standards established to award the prizes, Sponsor reserves the right not to award the prizes.
Eligibility:
  1. Open to full-time matriculated students ages 8-12, who are attending schools located in the United States. Void where prohibited by law. All state and local restrictions apply.
  2. Employees and their immediate family members living in the same household, of Sponsor, its parent, subsidiary, or affiliated companies or the agencies of any of these are not eligible for this Contest.
General:
  1. 1. No cash substitution, transfer or assignment of prizes allowed. In the event of the unavailability of a prize or prizes, Sponsor may substitute a prize or prizes of equal or greater value.
  2. All expenses, including taxes (if any), on receipt and use of prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner.
  3. Winner may be required to execute an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release. The Affidavit must be returned within fourteen (14) days of notification or another winner will be selected. If winner is under 18 years of age, parent/legal guardian will also be required to sign the Affidavit. Winner's school shall be required to provide a Federal Tax Identification Number to Sponsor for issuance of a 1099 Form, in connection with its receipt of the $1,000.00 prize
  4. By accepting a prize the winner grants to Sponsor the right to edit, publish, copy, display and otherwise use his or her entry in connection with this Contest, and to further use his or her name, likeness, and biographical information in advertising and promotional materials, without further compensation or permission, except where prohibited by law.
  5. By participating in the Contest and/or accepting a prize, contestants release Sponsor and Sports Illustrated Kids, their parent, subsidiary, and affiliated companies, authors whose books are promoted hereby or the agencies of any of them, from any liability, injury, damages, cost or expense, including reasonable attorney's fees, arising out of or connected to participation in this Contest or the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prizes.
  6. Any dispute arising from this Contest will be determined according to the laws of the State of New York, without reference to its conflict of law principles, and the entrants consent to the personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in New York County and agree that such courts have exclusive jurisdiction over all such disputes.
