Silva Signs Copies of Moscow Rules

Literary Department, ICM); Neil Nyren; Daniel Silva; David Bull (Art Restorer and the "real" Gabriel Allo

Daniel Silva is setting personal bests as his new Putnam novel, Moscow Rules, debuts at #1 on The New York Times hardcover fiction list for the week of August 10th. Moscow Rules is Silva's first #1 New York Times bestseller. This is also the first time ever that Silva has held slots on both the hardcover and mass-market New York Times bestseller lists simultaneously. The Secret Servant (Signet) has been on the mass-market paperback list for the past five weeks, reaching as high as #6, also a new record for Silva.

Critics across the country have been praising Moscow Rules, the eighth novel featuring legendary art-restorer-cum-Israeli-secret-agent Gabriel Allon, ever since it landed in bookstores. Today's USA Today writes "Silva 'Rules.'" The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says "put 'Moscow Rules' atop your summer beach book list;" and the Houston Press calls the book "A fast-paced thriller with all the appropriate twists and turns." The Rocky Mountain News declares "Silva continues to provide some of the most exciting spy fiction since Ian Fleming put down his martini and invented James Bond," while The Chicago Sun-Times says: "Silva just gets better as the questions get harder."

Silva has been traveling the country to promote Moscow Rules, with a 30-city "Feel the Love" tour including 33 bookstore events in New York City, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Houston, Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Atlanta, Atlantic Beach, Vero Beach, Cocoa Beach, West Palm Beach, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota, Tamps, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. He appeared on NBC's "The Today Show" live on publication date, and later that week was interviewed on MSNBC-TV's "Morning Joe" as well as MSNBC's evening news series "Road to the White House," and CNN-TV's popular "Glenn Beck Show." Between television appearances, Silva spoke at length about his book and its real-life parallels on national radio programs, including the "Hugh Hewitt Show" and the "Glenn Beck Show" — to which he was promptly invited back later in the week for another interview, this one devoted to the news about the Russian arms deal with Hugo Chavez — just the type of scenario that Daniel's novel predicted!

His latest event was last night at B&N Roseville in Minneapolis, where 125 people came out to hear him speak. After the discussion, the audience was treated to a special surprise celebration of the news that Moscow Rules had hit #1, with coffee and cake for everyone.

The Force was with Penguin Young Readers Group at ComicCon 2008

Penguin Young Readers Group was highly visible in ComicCon's Star Wars Pavilion, promoting its publishing program for Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Grosset & Dunlap). To promote the books, which went on sale globally on Saturday, July 26th, Penguin gave attendees bags featuring The Clone Wars and buttons that read "For the Good of the Galaxy" or "I Support the Galactic Republic." The Star Wars Pavilion saw a lot of foot traffic and high-profile guests in the booth included Dave Filoni, the Director of the upcoming Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie and television show (pictured with Director of Retail Marketing, Erin Dempsey).

Grosset & Dunlap has approximately one million books in print and DK has over 865,000 copies in print. National media is in full force and all major retailers are exerting tremendous muscle behind the books. Star Wars: The Clone Wars books are also being published by Ladybird and Puffin as well as in Penguin Australia. Clone Wars, the movie, will hit theatres on August 15th and will be followed by a primetime TV series on the Cartoon Network and TNT in the fall.

While enthusiasm was high for our Clone Wars property, many other Penguin Young Readers titles were equally embraced. We noticed incredible brand awareness for The Ranger's Apprentice series (Philomel/ Puffin) and The Looking Glass Wars series (Dial / Puffin), plus high interest in upcoming titles including Eon: Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman (Viking), Chalice by Robin McKinley (G. P. Putnam's Sons), The Youngest Templar: Keeper of the Grail by Michael Spradlin (Philomel), and Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link (Viking). Chapter samplers featuring a selection of these titles were given to thousands of attendees.

Penguin Young Readers authors participated in well-attended panels and autographings throughout the convention. Michael Carroll (Quantum Prophecy series/ Philomel) spoke on a panel called "Superhero Superfiction." Michael Reisman (Simon Bloom series/ Dutton) and Frank Beddor (Looking Glass Wars series/ Dial) spoke with fellow young adult authors D. J. MacHale and James Owen on a panel entitled "Hey Kids! The First One's in the Library." Michael Spradlin (The Youngest Templar: Keeper of the Grail/ Putnam) spoke on a panel called "Mythology, Secret Societies and Lost Civilizations." D. J. Steinberg, author of The Adventures of Daniel Boom, AKA Loud Boy (Grosset & Dunlap), also signed in the Penguin booth.

Penguin Young Readers Group's second year at ComicCon was a successful outing with high brand awareness and enthusiastic reception of our books.

Penguin Group (USA) and DK Books and Authors Rock ComicCon 2008

The Penguin Booth The DK Booth Jim Butcher Sign Books for Fans

Penguin Group (USA) and DK had a major presence at last week's ComicCon International 2008. The San Diego Convention Center hosted more than 150,000 guests each day, and the turnout for the Penguin booth was impressive, with 6,000 lucky conventioneers leaving with sample chapters of upcoming science fiction and fantasy titles.

Ace author Charlaine Harris was this year's ComicCon star, hobnobbing in the green room with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Hall (from Dexter), before participating on a panel with Alan Ball and the stars of HBO's upcoming series True Blood, based on her wildly popular and enormously successful Sookie Stackhouse series, and starring Oscar® winner Anna Paquin. The panel was packed to capacity with curious attendees, including one "Mr. Incredible," who asked if we could expect a real version of TruBlood, the faux beverage that's currently being advertised everywhere as part of HBO's ingenious ad-campaign. According to EW.com, Ball responded, "Yes...It's V8, valium, vicodin, and Viagra." Nearly two thousand attendees left the panel with True Blood gift bags containing t-shirts, comics, and a copy of Ace's Dead Until Dark, the first book in the series — which Alan Ball claims to be hooked on!

Roc's own Jim Butcher served as this year's ComicCon "Spotlight Author," wowing an audience of two thousand fans, including a "wizard" who dressed his magical staff as Harry Dresden, with talk of the Dresden Files. The signing for this event lasted two hours. Butcher also signed copies of Furies of Calderon, the latest in his series for Ace.

Speaking of TV tie-ins, Obsidian Mystery swept up three out of the four nominations for the Scribe Award for Best General Fiction Original: Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain's Murder She Wrote: Panning for Murder, Max Allan Collins' Criminal Minds: Jump Cut, and — the winner — Lee Goldberg's Mr. Monk and the Two Assistants!

Other Penguin events included great signings for authors Marjorie M. Liu (The Iron Hunt; Ace), Charles Stross (Saturn's Children; Ace), Rob Thurman (Madhouse and Moonshine; Roc), Chris Marie Green, (Night Rising; Ace), William C. Dietz (Legion of the Damned series; Ace), and Justine Musk (Lord of Bones; Roc), as well as an extremely well attended panel hosted by Ace Senior Editor Anne Sowards, Roc Editor Jessica Wade, and Penguin Young Readers Marketing Manager Lisa DeGroff. Their panel went so well, attendees visited the booth later to chat more!

Mysterious Galaxy again partnered with Penguin to promote and sell a good number of Penguin titles across our imprints, making ComicCon 2008 a roaring success!

DK staffers dazzled attendees with book signings and exclusive giveaways. Three hundred limited edition blueprints from Star Wars Blueprints were snapped up on preview night alone — that's only 3 hours of show time! DK's hottest titles were the new Star Wars Clone Wars: The Visual Guide and Star Wars Blueprints — both titles sold out by Saturday afternoon. Authors and illustrators who held signings in the DK booth include: Ryder Windham, Chris Trevas, Chris Reiff, Dan Wallace, and Jason Fry.

In addition to swag and signings, DK sponsored a panel, "The Making of The Vertigo Encyclopedia," which boasted over 100 attendees.

With a great line up of signings, press, panels, and giveaways, DK had its best ever ComicCon this year. To view some more fun pictures from the show, visit DK's photostream on Flickr.

Seth Godin's Tribes, Hits #5 on Amazon, Almost Three Months Before the Portfolio Book's Pub Date!

In a unique marketing campaign to promote his upcoming book, Tribes, (due in October from Portfolio) Seth Godin issued a special invitation on his blog, inviting his readers to join "a members-only tribe...for marketers, for leaders, for those focused on building communities or creating products or spreading ideas."

Godin, the most popular business blogger in the world, wrote: "This online community will live on a site we've created that will feature blogs, forums, social networking, comments, photos, videos and a job board. And it's by invitation only until October. Spots are limited and early members get privileges and bragging rights."

To get the invitation, readers were required to forward proof that they had pre-ordered Tribes from a bookseller. Readers jumped at the chance to take part, exceeding all expectations. Godin had planned to keep the offer open until August 10th, but ended up closing the group within 48 hours, after receiving an overwhelming response. The result: the book shot up to #5 on Amazon, nearly three months from pub date.

New This Week

Reading the OED by Ammon Shea (Perigee, on-sale now)

The Oxford English Dictionary turns 80 years old this fall, and at 20 volumes, weighing 137 lbs., it remains, without a doubt, the dictionary to end all dictionaries of the English language — the logophile's Mount Everest. But how many people possess the audacity to scale it entirely, to read every page, every word, every last possible definition? Ammon Shea did, and he lived to write about it. In Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages, Shea shares his eye-crossing, hair-pulling account of the solid year he spent doing nothing else, along the way plucking the most obscure, hilarious, oddly useful, and exquisitely useless gems in the lexicon. Take fleeten, which means "having the color of skim milk." Or petrichor, which is what you call that pleasant, loamy scent of new rain on the ground. Apricity is "the warmth of sun in winter."

Reading the OED is reviewed in the August 3rd edition of The New York Times Book Review, and Shea will be interviewed next week on NPR's "Morning Edition." Later this fall, Shea will also join a series of panel discussions on the OED, hosted by the Oxford University Press, as part of the dictionary's anniversary celebrations.

New Next Week

Take Back Your Family by Rev Run and Justine Simmons (Gotham, 8/5)

When the reality show "Run's House" debuted on MTV in 2005, it became a surprise smash hit. Rev Run, former member of hugely popular hip-hop group Run DMS, is now an ordained minister and father of six. The "Cosby Show" for a new generation, "Run's House" follows the lives of the Simmons family from their home in Saddle River, NJ. Unlike the typical dysfunctional family celebrity reality series, "Run's House" portrays a warm and caring family who struggles with universal issues and remains grounded despite enjoying all the trappings of success.

Now, with Take Back Your Family: A Challenge to America's Parents, Rev Run and his wife Justine Simmons offer their firsthand wisdom on parenting and a behind-the-scenes look at what has made their family so successful. Take Back Your Family emphasizes firm boundaries, noble values, discipline, and faith in an age marked by shallow materialism and fragmented families.

Rev Run and Justine have been creating a lot of stir with their new book. Media highlights include "The Today Show" (8/4), "BET News" (8/4), "Fox's Morning Show with Mike and Juliet" (8/5), "CNN Newsroom" (8/5), a feature on AOL "Black Voices," and a national radio tour. Justine Simmons will have a feature interview in Essence Magazine's August issue. Other great print include: a cover story in JET, September's Black Beat Magazine, and The New York Post.

Ahead of the Curve by Delves Broughton (The Penguin Press, 8/4)

This year, Harvard Business School (HBS) will celebrate its centennial anniversary. From 1908 through 2008, HBS has firmly established itself as one of the most influential institutions in global business. Its alumni include twenty percent of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, the current President of the United States, some of the world's savviest entrepreneurs like Michael Bloomberg, and some of our most notorious felons, such as ex-Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling. Among the ranks of these illustrious alumni is Philip Delves Broughton, a reporter who abandoned his highly successful journalism career to get his MBA degree from HBS and who now brings us Ahead of the Curve: Two Years at Harvard Business School, his revealing insider's account of this vaunted institution.

In 2004, Delves Broughton headed to HBS to join his 900 classmates, most of whom were fresh out of analyst programs at Wall Street's most prestigious investment banks and consulting firms, and were hoping that a Harvard MBA would be their golden ticket into the elite worlds of hedge funds and private equity. Once there he learned the core business values of HBS — leadership, decisiveness, ethical behavior, and work/life balance — and studied over 500 assigned case studies. In Ahead of the Curve, Delves Broughton shares the most revelatory, real-life lessons from these cases, gleaned from some of the world's foremost institutions, and also notes some of the unpleasant aspects of business school life, from the booze luges and the obsession with PowerPoint to the high rate of depression among the student body. With cutting insight and uproarious candor, Delves Broughton offers a richly detailed portrait of Harvard Business School — an institution that has for better or worse made American business what it is today.

Reviews and features for Ahead of the Curve are lining up — including coverage in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Economist, BusinessWeek, Details, Fortune, Financial Times, and the Associated Press. Delves Broughton will do events in Boston and New York, as well as national media interviews.

The Girl from Foreign by Sadia Shepard (The Penguin Press, 8/4)

Sadia Shepard grew up in a joyful, chaotic home just outside of Boston, the daughter of a white Protestant father from Colorado and a Muslim mother from Pakistan. Sadia's cultural legacy grew even more complex when she discovered that her beloved maternal grandmother was not a Muslim, but in fact had begun her life as Rachel Jacobs, a descendant of the Bene Israel, a tiny Jewish community whose members believe that they are one of the lost tribes of Israel, shipwrecked in India two thousand years ago. This new knowledge complicated Sadia's cultural inheritance even further, intimately linking her to the faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and to the customs of India, the United States, and Pakistan.

Before her grandmother's death, Sadia made her a promise to return to India to research the community that she had left behind. Her search to connect with the Bene Israel community and understand its unique traditions brought her into contact with a cast of remarkable characters, tested her sense of self, and forced her to examine what it means to lose and seek one's place, one's homelands, and one's history. In the process, she unearthed long-lost family secrets, confronted her fear of failure, and found love in places that surprised her. Sadia beautifully weaves together the story of her grandparents' secret marriage and the haunting legacy of Partition with an evocative account of a little-known Jewish community and a young woman's search for self.

The Girl From Foreign: A Search for Shipwrecked Ancestors, Forgotten Histories, and a Sense of Home is Sadia Shepard's poetic and touching attempt to reconcile with her family's past and help determine her own future.

Sadia is scheduled for an interview with Public Radio International's "The World" and a tour to New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Boston, and Miami. She will also tour to with the Jewish Book Network this fall.

Land of a Hundred Wonders by Lesley Kagen (NAL Accent Trade Paperback Original, 8/5)

Following the success of her debut novel Whistling in the Dark, Lesley Kagen embarks on a two- month tour throughout the Midwest and the South to promote her second novel, Land of a Hundred Wonders, next week. Land of a Hundred Wonders tells the story of Gibby McGraw: a protagonist in her early twenties who is NQR, or, Not Quite Right, in the head. When Gibby stumbles upon a dead body, the fledgling journalist (copies of Gibby's Gazette are available at her Grampa's diner) just might have found the story of a lifetime.

Lesley's tour kicks off with a big party at Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop in Mequon, WI, followed by stops in St. Louis, Memphis, Detroit, Atlanta, and more. Media highlights include interviews on "Lake Effect" (Milwaukee Public Radio), "Virginia this Morning" (CBS-TV) and "Tonic" (NPR), as well as print coverage in Shelf Awareness and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Land of a Hundred Wonders was chosen for the August Indie Next List and is a Midwest Bookseller's Association "Suggested Title" for August.
