Penguin Young Readers Group Breaks Its New York Times Bestseller Record with Eight Titles on the List for the Week of October 21st

As if having seven titles hit The New York Times bestseller list for each of the past two weeks wasn't impressive enough, Penguin Young Readers Group managed to top their all-time record with eight bestsellers for the week of October 21st. This week, Toy Boat by Randall de Seve, illustrated by Loren Long, debuts at #8 on the children's picture book list. In addition, also on the children's picture book list, Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett (G. P. Putnam's Sons) shoots up to #1 in its third week; Cowboy and Octopus by Jon Scieszka, illustrated by Lane Smith (Viking) is at #7 in its fifth week; Llama Llama Mad at Mama written and illustrated by Anna Dewdney (Viking) is at #9 in its third week; and I Miss You Everyday, written and illustrated by Simms Taback (Viking) is at #10, also in its third week. On the children's paperback list, We're Off to Find the Witch's House by Mr. Kreib, illustrated by R.W. Alley (Puffin) is at #8 in its third week; while The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor (Speak) is at #10 in its fourth week on that same list. Finally, Redwall by Brian Jacques (Philomel, hardcover and paperback) returns to the children's series list at #6 in its 42nd week. Congratulations to everyone responsible for this outstanding performance!

Penguin Young Readers Group has achieved 30 New York Times bestsellers year-to-date, eight more titles than the Young Readers Group had at this point in 2006.

Viking Author Elaine Pagels on Newsweek's 11 Powerful Women List

In the October 15th issue of Newsweek, Viking's Elaine Pagels, professor of Religion and author of Reading Judas (March 2007), was recognized and interviewed as one of 11 powerful women as a part of the publication's "Women and Power" cover story. Newsweek says: "These eleven women came from many different backgrounds, but they all had big dreams. The path to power meant facing obstacles and their biggest fears." Penguin Press Author Dave Isay Receives Murrow Award

Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps and its parent company Sound Portraits Productions, and author of the upcoming Listening Is An Act of Love (The Penguin Press) has received the 2007 Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. StoryCorps, a national project to record American oral histories, airs on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" and is housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The CPB presents the Murrow Award to individuals who foster public radio's quality and shape its direction. Founded in 1977 as the industry's most prestigious honor, this annual award is named for the legendary reporter, producer, executive and government official who championed responsible, courageous and imaginative uses of the electronic media during his distinguished 30-year career.

The New York Times Bestseller Highlights for the Week of October 21st

Three new debuts for Penguin Group (USA) on The New York Times bestseller list for the week of October 21st: Dark of the Moon by John Sandford (G. P. Putnam's Sons) is #3 on the hardcover fiction list; The Passion Test by Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood (Hudson Street) is at #8 on the hardcover advice, how-to and miscellaneous list; and Toy Boat by Randall de Seve, illustrated by Loren Long, debuts at #8 on the children's picture book list.

Here are more bestseller highlights for the week of October 21st:

On the hardcover fiction list, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (Riverhead) is at #4 in its twentieth week; Shoot Him If He Runs by Stuart Woods (G. P. Putnam's Sons) is at #8 in its second week; Dead Heat by Dick Francis and Felix Francis (G. P. Putnam's Sons) is at #10 in its third week; and Pontoon by Garrison Keillor (Viking) is at #14 in its fourth week.

On the hardcover nonfiction list, The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan (Penguin Press) is #2 in its third week, and Louder than Words by Jenny McCarthy (Dutton) is at #5, also in its third week.

On the trade paperback fiction list, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Riverhead) holds at #3 in its 135th week; The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards (Penguin) is at #5 in its 68th week; and Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos (Plume) is at #20 in its fifth week.

On the mass-market paperback fiction list, Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward (Signet) is at #6 in its second week; while Dark Celebration by Christine Feehan (Jove) holds at #12, also in its second week.

On the paperback nonfiction list, Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (Penguin) extends its run at #1 to 20 weeks in a row in its 37th overall week; Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin (Penguin) is at #5 in its 36th week; The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan (Penguin) is at #10 in its sixth week; and This is Your Brain On Music by Daniel J. Levitin (Plume) returns to the list at #17, in its fifth week.

On the advice, how-to and miscellaneous paperback list, Getting Things Done by David Allen (Penguin) moves up to #6 in its fourth week.
