I've been so overwhelmed with gratitude at the emails that have been showing up recently. I received one of these amazing emails today, and I wanted to share it:

Dear Danica,
Last week, my 12 year old, Kelsey, and I were waiting in the doctor's office for her sports physical. We were flipping through a copy of Newsweek and saw an article about your book-I ordered it as soon as we got home.

Math Doesn't Suck arrived yesterday. I can't express to you how impressed I am! Your writing is so perfectly geared toward middle school girls it is unbelievable. I haven't had a chance to read the whole book yet, but I spent quite some time yesterday afternoon flipping through the different sections. The blend of humor, your real life experiences, bios on successful women and encouragement is truly wonderful. I doubt I will have the opportunity to read more of the book for awhile, as I am the mother of three girls. My 10 year old, Avery is in line to read it next. (It will be a little while before Maggie, the 7 year old needs it)

Kelsey started reading as soon as she finished her homework yesterday afternoon. This morning, she took it to school to show her math teacher. She kept saying last night, "I never really understood some of these things before, and now I really do!" She told me that you explained things in a way that there was no way to not understand. She also said that you know exactly what it is like to be a middle schooler.

This book could not have come at a better time for my family. It has truly made sitting at the doctor's office last week for 3 hours more than worth it. You have made an amazingly positive impact on this family of 5!

Thank you so much.
Laura C.

P. S. I pulled up your math theorem online yesterday and showed it to all three of my girls and said, " That can be you one day."

I just want to say to THANK YOU to Laura for sharing this. Empowering girls like Kelsey by helping them "get math" is exactly why I wrote MDS, and this email brought a tear to my eye. Thank you, thank you!

I love to hear this stuff, and I encourage you to share your stories with me - and your questions - through my website www.mathdoesntsuck.com.

And thank you to all you parents who are involved in your kids' education. They need your guidance and partnership. You hold all the power... to make all the difference in the world. Thank you for what you do!

Reading your book

As a math teacher in a rural district, I realize that many of my students (both female and male) need to recognize the potential in mastering the wonders of mathematics. I had seen your book promoted on the NCTM website and was awaiting the release date. To my surprise and delight, my superintendent sent me a copy late last week and I began reading it over the Labor Day weekend.

I was thrilled to see in your opening remarks, how your confidence soared after learning mathematics, and how that confidence has helped you throughout your career. I intend to share that statement (and many others) with my students as well as some of the methods you employ in your book, hoping that they will share enough in my excitement to want to purchase the book themselves.

I always promote the knowledge of mathematics to students of both genders and, having the testimonials in your book to lean upon, I can easily provide current examples for the girls in my classes to follow. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book and for sharing your expertise and experiences with all of us.
