(View entire post here) The American Diabetes Association has named November as the month to spread awareness about diabetes in America. Diabetes is a disease that results from when a person's body either doesn't produce insulin (type 1) or does but the person's body doesn't respond to it (type 2). Insulin helps control blood sugar levels and diabetic people have high blood sugar levels, which can cause health problems, though today there are many ways to manage the disease.
In the United States, 24 million people have diabetes. Another 57 million are pre-diabetic, which means they are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. About 95% of the people diagnosed with diabetes have type 2. The only way to really know if you have the disease is to have a blood test done by your doctor, as there are no noticeable symptoms.
Diabetes is a disease that affects people of all different backgrounds but there are specific factors, such as family history of diabetes and overall health, which can indicate whether you may be at risk. The American Diabetes Association has simple test you can take here to see if you are at risk of developing diabetes.
The good news is that if you have diabetes, or find out you are at risk for diabetes, you can help control it with diet and exercise. Here are some books to help you learn about the disease and ways you can manage it.
