Viking Acquires Memoir by Jordan's King Abdullah II
Viking has acquired rights to King Abdullah II of Jordan’s memoir, The Last Best Chance: An Intimate Account of the Pursuit of Peace in a Time of Peril. It is almost unprecedented for a sitting monarch to pen a memoir that gives a full and frank reckoning with the most explosive issues he faces. King Abdullah II does this now out of a sense of great urgency, a conviction that a window of opportunity now exists for peace in the region, coupled with a fear that this window is closing rapidly. For ten years, King Abdullah II has ruled Jordan, a country at the center of strategic discussion regarding Israel and Palestine, Iraq, Iran, terrorism, and the future of relations between East and the West. Underlining the importance of Jordan’s role, President Barack Obama invited King Abdullah II to be the first Arab leader to meet at the White House during his administration.
The book will be a personal narrative rich with human drama. It is the inspirational story of a man who is suddenly called upon to serve his Kingdom, and makes his bride its Queen. It is a view of the central global crises of our time, from someone with the power and insight to lead the region forward into a brighter future. Through it all, King Abdullah II has been not just a wise observer but an active participant in major events—fighting terrorism, struggling for peace, and leading the effort to make his country an enlightened model for the region.
The memoir will be edited by Joy de Menil, Executive Editor at Viking, and is scheduled for publication in May 2010.
New Hudson Street Press Editor-In-Chief Acquires Bestselling Dr. Andrew Weil’s New Book
In her first acquisition as Editor-In-Chief of Hudson Street Press, Caroline Sutton has bought world publishing rights to Why Our Health Matters: A Vision of Medicine That Can Transform Our Future by New York Times bestselling author Andrew Weil, M.D. The book is scheduled for publication on September 8, 2009.
Why Our Health Matters shows what has gone wrong with the American way of health to create the crisis in which our country is embroiled. Dr. Weil goes to the root of the problem, showing how medical schools fail to give future doctors the best education to care for patients, how insurance companies have destroyed our opportunity to get excellent care, and how pharmaceutical companies have come to rule our lives. He offers a realistic vision of how we can achieve optimum health through a heightened sense of personal responsibility and a new model of medicine.
The author of five consecutive #1 New York Times bestsellers, Dr. Weil was hailed by the New York Times, noting that he "has arguably become America's best-known doctor” and was named one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997 and one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005 by Time magazine, appearing on the cover twice.
Portfolio to Publish Major Book by USC Football Coach Pete Carroll
Portfolio will publish Win Forever by Pete Carroll, Head Coach of the University of Southern California football team. Courtney Young will edit, and publication is planned for the spring of 2010. Coach Carroll will donate a portion of his proceeds to A Better LA, a non-profit devoted to reducing gang violence in the most crime-plagued neighborhoods of Los Angeles.
Win Forever will include previously untold details and anecdotes about USC football, as well as Coach Carroll's advice for building teams that stick together and consistently outperform expectations. He will also discuss leadership off the field, based on his charitable work with kids on the toughest streets of L.A. And he will show how the five principles of the "Win Forever" philosophy can be applied to any kind of endeavor.
Coach Carroll has a record of 88-15 over his eight seasons at USC. His teams have won seven consecutive Pac-10 conference titles and two national championships. They have set numerous records, including six BCS bowl victories, seven consecutive BCS bowl appearances, and 33 consecutive weeks as the AP's top-ranked team. Under Carroll, the Trojans have produced three Heisman Trophy winners (Carson Palmer, 2002; Matt Leinart, 2004; Reggie Bush, 2005) and are the first team to win three consecutive Rose Bowls.
