Messiness Is A Sign Of Creativity. Really., by Julie Kenner

So what's the state of your office? Mine is messy.

Messy. Yup, that pretty much covers it. My constant goal is to get it cleaned up. Thus far, I have not reached that goal, though I always try (and I seem to try harder when on deadline. Hmm. Procrastination? Or processing intricate plot points? I'm gonna go with processing...).

But about that mess... I tell myself the mess is part of the creative process, but I don't really believe that (though I do still use that excuse when my mother comes by and comments on it). Actually, it's a lack of time (and, yeah, I'm blogging on that whole Time To Write thing this week...so be sure to check back!). Because when you write and take care of a house and homeschool two kids...well, there are only so many hours in the day, and as much as I wish it weren't so, sleep is a necessary thing.

So here I am in my messy office, the bulk of the mess being gazillions of books (and folks wonder why I mostly buy my books in e-format now-there is no room in my house!) and lots and lots of papers.

Other than that, though, what do I have in my office? Well, I don't have any posters with inspirational quotes, even though I love that kind of thing. In fact, I was designing a banner with quotes for my office before we moved, but never finished it. (That was, um, five years ago. It's still unfinished.) And I have two desks, one with my computer and the other (ostensibly) a work table, but it has the extra computer where the 8 year old scans documents for me and files. (Get 'em started when they're young, that's my motto!)

Of course, the keyboard and scanner are currently buried under advance copies of books, author copies of Tainted to mail out, manuscripts, and bills. Hmmm.

I have a big cabinet full of researchey type stuff on which sits two printers, color and black and white. There are shelves over the cabinet, chock full of books and a picture frame made out of macaroni framing two smiling little girls. Behind my desk is a bulletin board with nothing actually related to writing tagged up on it. Another hmmmm.

And more bookshelves. And filing cabinets. And piles of (organized, really) paper.

And, usually, there's a cat wandering around somewhere...most often on the keyboard.

Is it just me? Who else works in organized chaos?
