Hello Penguin!
My name is Julie and I'll be your blogger for the week. Can I start you guys off with sparkling or tap?
So, a few things about me. I recently wrote a book called I Don't Care About Your Band, which comes out Tuesday. It's a memoir about my horrible dating experiences, mostly, but I also write about Night Court and Phoebe Cates and other items of tremendous cultural import.
I'm excited about the feedback I've been getting so far from people who've read advance versions of the book and liked it. And I'm particularly jazzed to get emails from guys I know who've read it and say things like; "Parts of your book were disgusting, but parts of it were really funny!" and "I usually hate this genre, but you did a pretty good job!" There's an art to the backhanded compliment, and I know enough people who could curate a whole museum. I could work at the gift shop!
What makes me super-happy is hearing from women who feel the title resonates with their own dating experiences and want, at this point, sort of their own version of High Fidelity--from a girl's point of view. I love that book and I think Nick Hornby gets more than anybody the defect of guys who know everything about love songs but nothing about how to be in love. I think my book shows the other side of that equation, from the point of view of a girl eager to connect, despite having been burned time and again by guys branding themselves as sensitive, when in fact, they're just a new kind of jerk.
Also, I have a comedy writing background, so there are a ton of jokes in the book. And parts of it are pretty dirty, so it has that going for it. And did I mention Night Court? I loved that show. Remember Bull?
Anyway, stick around; later in the week I'm going to "sound off" on Valentine's Day. And once you recover from my scathing "take" on that holiday, I'm going to give you a playlist of my favorite songs. Most or all of them will feature Carly Simon in some way, but that's not meant to be a threat!
x,
Julie
