Dear Kulkulkan:

Yeah, I know you're one of the Maya creator gods, not Santa Claus, and you get around in your winged serpent guise, not with a sleigh and however many reindeer, but Leah is making us all write ‘Dear Somethingorother' letters this winter solstice. She says it's a team building exercise. I think it's because this is her first year not celebrating the human holidays, but I'm not going to call her on it. I love her. She's my mate and my queen. Of course I'll write the letter. . . and so will everyone else here at Skywatch, or they'll answer to me.

So... on to the letter. Not that I would ever actually ask you for personal stuff when the lines of communication are open between us- we've usually got more important things to do, like kick some demon butt back where it belongs and keep it there through the end of 2012. Gods willing. But Leah says this letter should be about personal stuff, the stuff we want, as opposed to what we're prophecy-bound to do.

The thing is, it's all tied up together in my head. Unlike the others, who were raised human and only just learned that they're actually Nightkeepers, I've known all along who I am, and what is meant. Given that we've got four years of war ahead of us, as the barrier thins and the 12/21/2012 end date approaches, I just can't bring myself to think about things like a week in Maui, with Leah and no crises. Which would be nice. Okay, so maybe I'm thinking about it, but I wouldn't ask you for it- that's up to me to make happen. Which, come to think of it, maybe I will. I can't guarantee the no crises part, but I can probably make Maui happen. Or maybe I'll take her back to Florida. She'd like to visit her parents, I think, and her brother's grave, and maybe say goodbye to some of her cop friends. Yeah. That needs to happen. Closure is good.

But anyway, since this is my letter, I have to ask for something- that's Leah's rule. So I guess what I'd ask- if I were asking, which I'm not- would be for more information. With only a few of the Maya codices and spells left, we're working at a serious disadvantage here- we need to find the rest of the prophecies governing the end-time, and we need to know more about our own powers. With only a dozen magi left when the legends say there should've been hundreds, we need all the oomph we can get. So for this winter solstice, I guess I'm asking for a little help. The archives aren't enough- we need another spellbook. An oracle. Something to tell us what the heck we're supposed to be doing down here to protect mankind from the big Game Over.

Maybe that's not personal enough, I don't know. But when you're king, the big stuff is personal. And these days, it's all big stuff.

Sincerely,

Strike
