Penguin Group (USA) Dominates The New York Times Bestseller Lists, With Four #1 Bestsellers Simultaneously for the Fourth Time in the First Eight Weeks of the Year
The House Also Owns Nearly 40% of The New York Times Hardcover Fiction List; 45% of the Mass Market List, and Has Nine Debut Bestsellers
Penguin Group (USA) once again holds four #1 positions simultaneously on The New York Times bestseller lists. This is the fourth time this year that Penguin Group (USA) has achieved four simultaneous #1 New York Times bestsellers in the same week.
For the week of February 24th, In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan (The Penguin Press) holds at #1 in its sixth week on the hardcover nonfiction list; The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett (NAL) holds at #1 in its thirteenth week on the trade paperback fiction list; Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (Penguin) is #1 in its 55th week on the paperback nonfiction list; and A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle (Plume) (see item above) holds at #1 in its second week on the paperback advice, how-to, and miscellaneous list.
In addition, Penguin Group (USA) continues to dominate the hardcover fiction bestseller list, occupying six of the 15 slots. This week, Stranger in Paradise by Robert B. Parker (G. P. Putnam's Sons) debuts at #4; A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (Riverhead) is #5 in its 38th week; World Without End by Ken Follett (Dutton) is #7 in its eighteenth week; People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks (Viking) is #9 in its sixth week; Sizzle and Burn by Jayne Ann Krentz (G. P. Putnam's Sons) is #10 in its second week; and Beverly Hills Dead by Stuart Woods (G. P. Putnam's Sons) is #12 in its fourth week. This marks the 16th week in a row (four months straight!) that Penguin Group (USA) has occupied 30% or more of the hardcover fiction bestseller list.
Penguin Group (USA) also dominates the mass market fiction list, with nine out of 20 bestsellers, including six new debuts: Hard to Handle by Lori Foster (Berkley) hits at #2; Dawn's Awakening by Lora Leigh (Berkley) debuts at #3; Tom Clancy's Endwar by David Michaels (Berkley) is at #8; White Lies by Jayne Ann Krentz (Jove) is at #9; White Night by Jim Butcher (Roc) is at #14; and Freefall by JoAnn Ross (Signet) appears at #20. Rounding out Penguin Group (USA)'s nine debut bestsellers, the Young Readers division has two new debuts this week. Valentines are for Saying I Love You by Margaret Sutherland, illustrated by Amy Wummer (Grosset & Dunlap) appears at #4 on the paperback list, while Barack Obama by Roberta Edwards, illustrated by Ken Call (Grosset & Dunlap) appears at #9 on that same list.
