Thank you Rafe, for your powerful inspiration. I have taught for twenty years...various grades, now 5th grade. I know I am making a difference and feel good about what I do. Some days I know I am making a difference simply by being genuinely kind to my students, instead of instilling fear. The opposition is upsetting and I become so disheartened. We are so closely scrutinized. The entire academic focus is test-based and I feel very limited in how creative I can be. On the hardest, saddest days I re-read a section of "Teach Like Your Hair is on Fire." It helps, but I feel we are a dying breed. How do you rise above the scrutiny? How do you continue to nod in agreement, when the strongest part of your soul opposes?
