Penguin Group (USA) BookExpo America CEO Panel Update:

Penguin Group USA CEO David Shanks Speaks at BookExpo AmericaIt was a lively discussion at BookExpo America this morning as several prominent industry executives gathered at the Javits to discuss "The Value of a Book." eBooks, of course, were the hot topic, as panelists agreed that the industry is rapidly changing and we must change along with it.

Penguin Group (USA) CEP Panel at BookExpo America 2010Panelists agreed that the industry needs to open the distribution lines and make books available to the customer in any way we can. Making books readily available to consumers could also help deflect piracy and increase sales. Different distribution outlets help push books out in a congested digital world.

But we can't forget about physical books, which still account for over 90% of the business. Penugin CEO David Shanks made the point that eReaders are still expensive investments. And the paperback isn't dead. "There's a reason that the word "mass" is in "mass market," said Shanks. There's still a market for physical books.
