Penguin Young Readers Group Makes If I Stay a New York Times Bestseller

If I Stay (Dutton Children’s Books), the highly-anticipated new novel from award-winning journalist Gayle Forman, debuts at #7 on this week’s New York Times children’s chapter book bestseller list. The #1 IndieNext pick for this spring hit shelves on April 2nd and has since received major national news coverage including features in USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, and The Wall Street Journal among others. Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the blockbuster Twilight has signed on to direct Summit Entertainment’s If I Stay movie, a move that has led media outlets to dub If I Stay “the next Twilight” including MTV.com, and Tina Brown’s “The Daily Beast” (read the full article here).

Penguin Young Readers Group championed the novel from day one. Early galleys were rushed to start early buzz at BEA 2008. The Young Readers Group then launched an extensive bookseller campaign which included special galley mailings, a five-city bookseller dinner tour with the author in October, and early online advertising to build excitement. IfIStay.com was launched in February, featuring a book trailer, author video and comment tool. The book has now received five starred reviews and foreign rights sold in 18 countries to date.

A haunting novel about a girl who must decide whether or not she has the will to live after a catastrophic car accident, If I Stay is a sophisticated, layered, and heart wrenchingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make—and the ultimate choice we each command.
