Thirteen Penguin Group (USA) Authors Featured at 2009 National Book Festival

The 2009 National Book Festival, an annual event organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress, will be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Sept. 26th, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the festival features more than 70 award-winning authors, illustrators and poets appearing in "Fiction & Fantasy," "Mysteries & Thrillers," "History & Biography," "Children," "Teens & Children," "Poetry," and "Home & Family" pavilions. In addition, fun activities that promote reading will be set up for children in the popular "Let's Read America" pavilion. Individual 30-minute author presentations and one-hour book signings by the participating authors are the heart of the National Book Festival, which is designed to bring readers together with their favorite writers and illustrators.

Thirteen authors from Penguin Group (USA) will be participating in the Festival this year: Haynes Johnson/ Dan Balz (Viking); Sue Monk Kidd/ Ann Kidd Taylor (Viking); Junot Diaz (Riverhead); Daniel Silva (Putnam); Walter Mosley (Riverhead); Mark Kurlansky (Riverhead); Margaret Coel (Berkley); Craig Johnson (Berkley); as well as Penguin Young Readers Group authors Jacqueline Woodson (Young Readers); Stephen Kellogg (Young Readers); Nikki Grimes (Young Readers). In addition, Junot Diaz was selected as one of three headlining authors to give a short address at the Washington Post breakfast.

Penguin Group (USA) will also once again sponsor a booth with the Pearson Foundation in the Let’s Read America Pavilion, where they can have their photo taken with the Penguin, create their own personalized bookmarks and enjoy other arts & crafts projects from Jumpstart’s Read for the Record and the 2009 campaign book, A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. There will also be group readings, free books, and other prizes given away all day.

Kate Jacobs, Author of The Friday Night Knitting Club, Featured in Lands' End Campaign to Provide Hats for the Homeless

Lands' End has invited Putnam and Berkley’s New York Times bestselling author Kate Jacobs to team up with them this Fall for their Holiday 2009 project, the FeelGOOD Campaign. With the purchase of a FeelGOOD sweater, mitten or hat, Lands' End will donate yarn to Warming Families, a national charity that knits clothing for the homeless. Warming Families estimates that they will knit 25,000 hats for the homeless this Fall alone! Kate Jacobs and Putnam/Berkley are proud to be a part of this project. Kate is visiting several Lands' End stores this month in the Boston, Portland and Seattle areas to promote the FeelGOOD campaign.

Lands' End will sell copies of Kate's forthcoming novel, Knit the Season (Putnam; on-sale 11/3) through its website and in its massively popular holiday catalog, which have a combined reach of 20 million customers.

Lands' End will post the jacket covers of the entire Friday Night Knitting Club series on their web site, and are selling copies of The Friday Night Knitting Club at this month's events with Kate. Also participating in the FeelGOOD campaign is Vickie Howell, host of DIY-TV's "Knitty Gritty" program, who designed a knitting pattern for Lands' End customers to use in making a hat for Warming Families.
