Penguin's coming to Comic-Con!:

(View entire post here)

Psst...going to San Diego for Comic-Con? Want to know where to find your favorite Penguin and DK authors (and editors)? Search no more! Here is our handy dandy sure-to-be-patented schedule of where we'll be, when. We don't have absolutely all the locations yet and some events are still being finalized, but hey, that's what the Comic-Con Events guide is for.

This year you'll find us at three (count'em, three) different booths in the exhibition hall.

For lovers of all things Star Wars (and Marvel and DC), DK is located at #2913G, in the Star Wars Pavilion.

Our Young Readers division is at #2913R in the Star Wars Pavilion.

And you'll find your friendly neighborhood Ace / Roc staffers at booth #1117, where we'll have the most up to date schedule and we'll be giving away all kinds of samplers, bookmarks, buttons, and some truly capacious bags. We're right next door to #1119, home of stellar science fiction & fantasy / mystery / horror independent bookseller Mysterious Galaxy, where many of the Ace and Roc author signings will be taking place (and where there will be lots of terrific books).

The Rising Light at Patuxent, by Craig Nelson:

(View entire post here)

Even though it's the dream of anyone who writes about aviation to make an appearance at Smithsonian's National Air and Space - the Rocket Men table was next to Apollo 11's Columbia on the floor and The Spirit of St. Louis in the air - I have to say that my favorite D.C. invitation came from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, where The Right Stuff found its opening chapters. Since another of my books, The First Heroes, tells the story of the birth of the Air Force in World War II with the Doolittle Raid, I've done a lot of talks with servicemen. And these audiences always end up surprising me right out of my shoes.

Every time I talk at a military academy or base, I start off dreading that the audience will be be gimlet-eyed and blasé, youths slouched in boredom and impossible to reach. But in fact, every time, the exact opposite happens - the hardcore military pilots are the most enthusiastic audience ever, fans who are super fans. It's even visible in economic fundamentals: A young aviator, buying three hardcovers at $85 while being paid military grade, is making a serious commitment. Yet, every time this happens, I'm startled all over again, even though I've seen it time after time at Wright-Pat, and the Citadel, and numerous base-adjacent flight museums. And it was at Pax River that I finally understood.

Rooftops of Tehran Chosen For Villanova's Fall One Book Program

Villanova University has chosen Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji (NAL) for their annual One Book Villanova Program for this coming Fall. The school is buying 7500 copies from Special Sales, and is bringing the author to campus. This is one of the biggest FYE programs in the country and its prominence will help position this great book with other schools' FYE programs. Villanova was one of the first schools to pick The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Riverhead) some years back and this led to a flood of FYE picks for that book. Like The Kite Runner, Rooftops of Tehran has all the right elements for a perfect FYE title: cultural history, connections to current world events, a great coming-of-age story, and strong characters and narrative.

Viking's What I Thought I Knew by Alice Eve Cohen Generates Major Media Coverage

Author Alice Eve Cohen was interviewed by CBS "Early Show" host Harry Smith on Monday's program about her new Viking book, What I Thought I Knew, which went on sale Monday, July 13. Smith was genuinely moved by Cohen's personal and medical odyssey. Click here to view the segment. A central part of her story: at age forty-four, Cohen was diagnosed with an abdominal tumor, when she was, in fact, six months pregnant. An in-depth feature on Cohen ran on the front page of the Arts section in the July 11th edition of The New York Times, with reporter Felicia R. Lee writing, "Her memoir, which is shot through with humor, touches on many topics: the differences between biological motherhood and adoption, abortion, the value of a life for someone with disabilities, and the stormy mix of ambivalence and love that many women bring to motherhood." Click here to read the full feature, which follows coverage in More, Elle and O magazine, including the book in its summer reading round-up. Cohen also had a fantastic booksigning at the Corner Bookstore in NYC on Wednesday night. Still to come is a feature in the New York Post, review in People magazine and much more!

G.P. Putnam's Sons' Black Hills by Nora Roberts Debuts at #1 on The New York Times Hardcover Fiction Bestseller List

#1 New York Times bestselling author and publishing phenomenon Nora Roberts' latest release from G.P. Putnam's Sons, Black Hills, hit shelves last week, garnering much praise and the #1 slot on The New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list. Black Hills represents the industry-leading 22nd #1 New York Times bestseller for Penguin Group (USA) so far in 2009.

At a successful subscribers-only event of 550 people at the Washington Post on Tuesday, Roberts offered "witty and wonderful advice" to writers, answered questions and signed copies of Black Hills. She is now in Washington, DC for the Romance Writers of America convention where she will sign books, answer questions, and participate in other convention activities with the 2,000 editors, agents, writers, and industry professionals expected to attend the conference.

Nora is continuing an outstanding year, with Black Hills on the heels of book one of her first original trade paperback series, Vision in White, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times trade paperback fiction list in May. With Vision in White, Nora has achieved #1 New York Times bestsellers across all formats—hardcover, trade paperback and mass market. It's clear to see why the New Yorker hailed Nora Roberts as "America's favorite author" in a recent profile.
