There have been countless remakes of A Christmas Carol in the century and a half since Dickens wrote the classic Christmas tale, but this year fans of the Crachetts, Scrooge, and the Christmas spirits can see the original manuscript with Dickens' handwritten revisions. The manuscript is on display at the Morgan Library and Museum in Manhattan through January 10, and turned to page 37.
For those who want to view the manuscript from the comfort of their computer screen, the New York Times has reproduced the entire manuscript with its original notes. It is a fascinating glimpse into the world of a world-renowned author and a method of editing that predated typewriters, computers, and (gasp!) spellcheck! (Image on right from The New York Times)
The Penguin Audio Book Break is currently featuring the complete audio of A Christmas Carol for free on From The Publisher's Office web site in segments over the next several weeks. Join us and celebrate the holidays Dickens style this year!
