Penguin Group (USA) Takes Home Two Edgar Awards

Last night, the 63rd Annual Edgar Awards Banquet took place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City and Penguin Group (USA) had two winners . In the “Best Paperback Original” category, China Lake by Meg Gardiner (NAL) was the winner and John Green’s Paper Towns (Dutton Children’s Books) won in the Best Young Adult category.

This year, 68 judges considered over 1,000 books, 500 short stories, many television programs, several movies, and a few plays. The awards, given by Mystery Writers of America, are widely acknowledged to be the most prestigious awards in the genre.
 

Penguin Group Canada Sweeps the 2009 CBA Libris Awards Shortlist

The Canadian Booksellers Association announced the finalists for the 2009 CBA Libris Awards last week, recognizing Penguin Group (Canada) in nine major categories including Author of the Year, Children’s Author of the Year, Fiction Book of the Year, Non-Fiction Book of the Year and Publisher of the Year, which Penguin Canada won last year.

Nominations for Penguin Group (Canada) in 2009 include:

  • Joseph Boyden for Author of the Year
  • Budge Wilson for Children’s Author of the Year
  • Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden for Fiction Book of the Year
  • A Fair Country by John Ralston Saul for Nonfiction Book of the Year
  • Nicole Winstanley for Editor of the Year
  • Adrienne Kerr for Sales Representative of the Year
  • The Extraordinary Canadians campaign for Marketing Achievement of the Year
  • Penguin Group (Canada) for Distributor of the Year
  • Penguin Group (Canada) for Publisher of the Year

The CBA Libris Awards recognize and celebrate the achievements of all of those people who create, promote and deliver great books to Canadian readers. Voted on by members of the book industry, the CBA Libris Awards are announced annually in June at CBA’s Summer Conference in Toronto.

The 2009 Libris Award nominations round out another stellar year for Penguin in Canada, beginning with the company’s award of Publisher of the Year in 2008, and including the launch of Extraordinary Canadians, Joseph Boyden’s win of the 2008 Scotiabank Giller Prize, and a 2008 Gold Award from the Canadian Marketing Association.
 

Two Penguin Press Authors Take Home 2008 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes

The 2008 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes were awarded this past weekend and two Penguin Press authors were named winners. Barton Gellman, author of Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency , won in the Current Interest category and Mark Mazower, author of Hitler’s Empire: How the Nazis Ruled Europe, was the winner in the History category. The Prizes served as the kickoff event of the 14th annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, one of the nation’s premier public literary festivals and the largest of its kind on the West Coast.

The Los Angeles Times Book Prizes were established in 1980 and include a $1,000 cash award for each winner. Hosted by Times Book Prizes Director Kenneth Turan and Book Editor David L. Ulin, the Book Prizes recognized 2008’s 45 outstanding finalists in nine categories.
 

Tarcher/Penguin Wins Fourteen Nautilus Silver Awards, A Record-Breaking Performance

Tarcher/Penguin has won a record 14 out of 23 categorical awards in the 2009 Nautilus Book Awards. It is the highest number of Nautilus Silver Awards ever won by a single publisher.

Tarcher/Penguin award-winners include The Scalpel and the Soul by Allan J. Hamilton, MD (Health/Healing/Energy Medicine), The Dumbest Generation by Mark Bauerlein (Conscious Media/Journalism), The Art of Being by Dennis Merritt Jones (Spirituality), Toward 2012 edited by Daniel Pinchbeck and Ken Jordan (Cosmology/New Science), The Power of Giving by Harvey McKinnon and Azim Jamal (Social Change/Activism/Peaceful Solutions) and A Course in Happiness by Mardi Horowitz, MD (Psychology/Personal Growth).

The Nautilus Book Awards were conceived to recognize and reward world-changing books. The winners and finalists are carefully selected in a three-tier judging process by an experienced team of book reviewers, librarians, authors, editors, bookstore owners, and leaders in the publishing industry. Winning titles will be exhibited in a 2009 Nautilus Book Awards Showcase at BookExpo America held in the Jacob Javits Center in New York from May 28 - 31, 2009. All Silver Awardwinning titles will now move to the third and final phase of judging where the Gold Award-winners for each category will be selected. Gold Winners will be announced on www.nautilusbookawards.com on the morning of Friday, May 30th as well as at BEA.

Viking/ Penguin’s Geraldine Brooks Wins 2009 New England Book Award for Fiction

Viking/ Penguin Author Geraldine Brooks won the 2009 New England Book Award for Fiction from the New England Independent Booksellers Association (NEIBA) for People of the Book.

The New England Book Awards promote New England authors and publishers who have produced a body of work that stands as a significant contribution to New England's culture. Nominations are solicited from more than 350 New England bookstores and publishers. Bookstores throughout New England feature the works of the winners. Each author award is accompanied by a $500 grant from NEIBA to a literacy or other charitable organization chosen by the winner.

The winners will accept their awards at the NEIBA Trade Show at the Awards Luncheon Thursday, October 1st in Hartford, CT.

Penguin Young Readers Author Peg Kehret Wins Two State Reading Awards

Author Peg Kehret has won two state reading awards. Her novel Abduction! (Dutton) won the 2009 Iowa Children’s Choice Award and The Ghost’s Grave (Puffin) won the 2009 Florida Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award. The Iowa Children’s Choice Award is sponsored by the Iowa Association of School Librarians. The Sunshine State Young Reader's Award Program is cosponsored by the School Library Media Services Office of the Department of Education and the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME), began in 1983.

Great Media Continues for Viking/ Plume Author David Benioff

Author David Benioff continues events and media for the national bestseller City of Thieves, now in paperback from Plume. This Thursday, he'll kick-off the ‘One Region’ program in Groton, CT where he will do an event and local media. He moves on to Amarillo, TX on May 4th for their ‘Amarillo Reads’ Program, for which he’ll be doing local media and an event as well.
