How to Request Permission to Copy from Penguin Group (USA) Inc.

Online

Click here to check on the availability of rights for a particular title and use; find information on where to go for rights not handled by the Penguin Group (USA) Adult Permissions Department or apply for permissions on line.

In Writing

Please place your request as early as possible, (i.e. when you order textbooks). We need time to research and perhaps refer you elsewhere since we do not always control rights to the material you want.

Written requests for ADULT IMPRINTS must be sent to: Permissions Department, Penguin Group (USA), Inc., 375 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10014, or requests may be sent by fax to: (212) 366-2943.

Your request should include the following information:

  • Title of our book (not a textbook or other secondary source).
  • Our Author, Translator, or Editor's full name and Illustrator if applicable.
  • Publisher (e.g. NAL, Dutton, Viking, Penguin, Berkley, etc.).
  • ISBN of our book, if available.
  • Identify our material as specifically as possible by title and/or chapter and/or pages and author and translator if that is different from the book; figures, illustrations and charts, etc.
  • Give full name of school, course, professor and term.
  • Total number of copies required and whether material will be used alone or in combination with other photocopied material in a custom coursepack.
  • If for other use than coursepack, give details, including dates & quantities.

Written requests for CHILDREN'S IMPRINTS must be sent to: Permissions Department, Penguin Group (USA) Books for Young Readers, 345 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10014, or requests may be sent by fax to: (212) 414-3340.

Your request should include the following information:

  • ISBN of our book, if available.
  • Identify our material as specifically as possible by title and/or chapter and/or pages and author and translator if that is different from the book; figures, illustrations and charts, etc.
  • Give full name of school, course, professor and term.
  • Total number of copies required and whether material will be used alone or in combination with other photocopied material in a custom coursepack.
  • If for other use than coursepack, give details, including dates & quantities.
  • Please include a copy of the material as it appears in a Penguin Putnam book (a copy of the material from a secondary source is insufficient).
  • If you wish to use the entire text/illustrations from a Penguin Putnam book in an anthology, please let us know how many selections will be included in your anthology.

Clearance for most Penguin Classics must be obtained from: Permissions Department, Penguin Books Limited. 80 Strand, London, WC2R ORL, England. Fax: 011-020-7010-6060.

N.B If your source is a textbook, an anthology or a collection of various authors' works, you must review the copyright acknowledgement page(s) to locate the information pertaining to the original source for the material in the book which you wish to copy. Your permission request must give the title of the book, author, title of material, and copyright date as it appears in the acknowledgement, and should be directed to the party having given permission. If you are unsure about the information contained in the acknowledgement, call the publisher for clarification.

If the book is a paperback, please check the copyright page carefully to see if it contains information indicating that the paperback was published by arrangement with another publisher and/or that a previously published hardcover was published by another publisher. In most cases you should apply for permission to the original hardcover publisher. Again, if you are unsure, call the publisher.

Thank you: Penguin Group (USA) Permissions Department
