Lizabeth Zindel

Lizabeth Zindel spent five years working in the film industry in Los Angeles, so she knows her topic intimately. Most recently, Ms. Zindel worked at Maverick Entertainment. She now lives in New York City. What were you like growing up?

I was born in Manhattan, but moved back and forth between Los Angeles and NYC. I think I moved 10 times by the time I was 13. I was free-spirited, creative and outgoing, but also enjoyed time alone to be more quiet and introspective.

Childhood ambition?

singer, writer, actress.

What were your own high school experiences like?

I went to The Dalton School in New York City from second grade through senior year of high school. I had a group of very close friends and we enjoyed shopping in the village at vintage stores, hanging out on brownstone stoops talking, relaxing in the Sheep's Meadow in Central Park, going to the movies and eating Tasti Delight frozen yogurt. I acted in a bunch of the school's plays. My favorite role was Sally Bowles in Cabaret. I was also editor of the school's literary journal named Blue Flag and enjoyed writing short stories and poetry.

Do you have a favorite place to write?

At a desk in my living room, facing the huge windows where I can see a strip of blue sky and the brownstones across the way. Sometimes I mix it up and cafe hop around the Upper West Side. I like to have a nice, chilled glass of iced tea by my side. Lately, I've been addicted to Starbuck's Passion Fruit iced tea.

Favorite films?

Annie Hall, About A Boy, Mean Girls, Splendor in the Grass, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Dead Poets Society, Gardenstate, Almost Famous, Stand by Me, Muriel's Wedding, Good Will Hunting, A Room with a View

Most influential book?

My favorite books growing up were Tuck Everlasting, anything by Judy Blume and Roald Dahl, Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, and the lyrical beauty and sensitivity of Tennessee Williams' plays such as The Glass Menagerie.

What were some of your previous jobs before becoming a writer?

I worked as an assistant to a Hollywood agent at Creative Artists Agency, sang in the children's chorus at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, appeared in a few rock music videos, and interned for Robert DeNiro's film company called Tribeca Films.

Adjectives to describe The Secret Rites of Social Butterflies?

private, truthful, hidden, invitation-only,prestigious, mischievous, fashionable, top-secret, ritzy, exclusive

Favorite dessert?

Pinkberry with raspberries, strawberries and chocolate chips

Life motto?

"If the writing is honest it cannot be separated from the man who wrote it. " - Tennessee Williams
