Savannah Russe

Savannah Russe is a professional copywriter. She has previously published two works of nonfiction, and her short stories have appeared in many small press magazines in the U.S. and Europe. In addition to writing, she runs an antiques barn called Big Red Barn on her 32 acre farm in the Endless Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania. Also "on the farm" are eleven cats and three dogs, along with bunnies, deer, bears, foxes, wild turkeys… and, of course, bats.

What sort of things make up a typical day in your life?

Ha, you had to ask! Every day begins with a strong cup of black coffee and one inescapable task—changing the cats boxes, all three of them. Those doggone cats (8 of the critters) do a lot of pooping.

I also write every day, pretty much 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If I'm not working on a story, I spend tons of time writing emails.

And if it's a lucky day, I have gotten a call to go out to look at antiques someone wants to sell. That's always an adventure. I recently bought an 1895 dictionary stand with brass legs and an oak top. . .for $80. I was over the moon.

Are you skeptical of things paranormal, or a believer that there is more to life than is easily seen?

Okay, truth telling time. I buy and sell antiques as I just mentioned. I have had a half dozen incidents where things I've bought have done some very strange things. For example, a century-old desk from a one-room school house sent a lighting bolt of energy up my arm when I was cleaning it and clearly asked me, "Where are the children?" It was inexpressibly sad, not scary. I also had a chandelier that jumped on its chain and a framed picture of a Civil war widow that flew off its stand—while I stood there telling a friend what was written on the back of the picture.

On top of that my old, built-in-1864 house is haunted. Plus I had some very weird experiences in my favorite city, Savannah (where else?). I could write a book, no pun intended.

Bottom line. I'm not the least bit skeptical. The seen world is just one aspect of what's "out there."

What's the oddest place you've ever been while struck with a story idea/bit of dialogue/plot point?

You just made me laugh. Beneath the Skin: The Darkwing Chronicles, Book Three had my vampire heroine Daphne and her two cohorts, J and Cormac, up above a ceiling in the Opus Dei headquarters, crawling along the air vents—and I couldn't get them out, for a while anyway. I became almost as claustrophobic as my characters.

Which of your characters, if met in person, would send you running away while screaming at the top of your lungs? Which would cause you to behave in a fashion most unseemly?

If I ran into the huge, brutish vampire hunter after Daphne in Under Darkness, I'd run for my life. I don't really think he's human and he sure doesn't have a heart or conscience.

As for which character would make me behave in a "fashion most unseemly?"—no contest there: Darius della Chiesa, the bad boy turned vampire that Daphne can't forget. . .or trust. He's such a hunk, I salivate and tend to forgive him anything (so does Daphne BTW).

Do you have a secret, burning desire to write something totally different from what you're writing now?

Ahh, it's not so secret. I love thrillers—edgy, suspenseful, and action-packed, where the good guy wins after several narrow escapes. I guess I really like sticking it to the villains of the world. I can't do it in real life, but I sure like to do it in my writing.
