H. R. Woudhuysen was educated at St Paul's School and Pembroke College, Oxford, and was a Junior Research Fellow at Lincoln College, Oxford. Since 1982 he has been a lecturer in the Department of English at University College London. He has edited Samuel Johnson on Shakespeare for the New Penguin Shakespeare Library.
