Bexleyheath. 09/08/1962

The Giant Jam Sandwich
Most treasured possession:
A little toy traction engine that I’ve had all my life.
Favourite song:
It’s very gloomy but I love ‘The Day Before You came’ by Abba.

The Railway Children
When did you start illustrating?
I’ve drawn since I was a toddler but I was nine when I got serious about it and decided I was going to be a professional artist one day.
Where do you get your ideas?
From everywhere and nowhere. From observing the world around me but also from doing lots of daydreaming and remembering what it felt like to be a child.
Three top tips for being an illustrator.
1. Really obvious but do lots and lots and lots and lots of drawing, and try to complete your drawings as often as you can.
2. Do plenty of drawing from real life as well as working from your imagination.
3. Be prepared to draw anything, even if it means finding clever way to do it.( sometimes if you just show part of something or hint at it, it can be more effective than trying to draw the whole thing!)
Favourite memory:
When I was eleven and we went on our first camping holiday to the Lake District, Northumberland and Swaledale in Yorkshire which remains my favourite place in the whole world.
Hobbies:
Napping, snoozing and having lie-downs.
It you weren’t an illustrator what would you be?
I think I’d have to go back to being a paperboy again.
