Jeremy Rifkin

Author, activist, and philosopher Jeremy Rifkin has become one of America's leading social critics. He is the author of fourteen books on the impact of technological changes on the economy, the workforce, society, and the environment. His books have been translated into fifteen languages and are used in hundreds of colleges and graduate schools around the world. Mr. Rifkin has lectured and been a resident scholar at more than 300 universities in some ten countries in the past 25 years.

His most recent book, The End of Work, is the result of a three year study of the changing conditions and nature of work in the Information Age. Mr. Rifkin holds a degree in economics from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce of the University of Pennsylvania, and a degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He is a frequent guest lecturer at many of America's leading business schools, and speaks regularly before business and trade association conferences.

In the mid 1970s, Rifkin's books, Common Sense and Own Your Own Job, were the first to popularize the idea of worker owned and managed companies. Today, 25 years later, United Airlines and other large firms are being bought out by their employees, changing the way America does business.

In the late 1970s, Mr. Rifkin co-authored The North Will Rise Again: Pensions, Politics, and Power in the 1980s, a trailblazing work that is widely credited with altering public perception of and government policy on the social use of pension fund investments in the United States.

In the 1980s, Mr. Rifkin authored Entropy, the international bestseller that brought together environmental and economic theory for the first time. The book helped lay the groundwork for current notions of sustainable development.

Mr. Rifkin has been influential in shaping public policy in the United States and around the world. He has testified before numerous congressional committees and has had consistent success in litigation against the government to ensure responsible government policies on a variety of environmental and technology issues. His unique perspective and social commentary have made him a frequent guest on numerous television programs, including Face the Nation, Nightline, 20/20, Larry King Live, Firing Line, Donahue, Good Morning America, and The Today Show. He has been featured in many of the nation's most prominent newspapers and magazines.

The National Journal, among the nation's leading public policy journals, named Rifkin as one of 150 people in the U.S. that have the most influence in shaping federal government policy.

Mr. Rifkin is the founder and president of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington, DC.
