Sir Nikolaus Pevsner was from 1949 to 1955 Slade Professor of Fine Art and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. In 1959 he became Professor of the History of Art at Birkbeck College, University of London, and remained there until his retirement in 1969 when he became Emeritus Professor.

He was made a CBE in 1953 and received a knighthood in 1969. From its inception he edited the Pelican History of Art and Architecture and wrote most of the Buildings of England by counties, as well as editing the whole series. He wrote many other books including The Englishness of English Art, An Outline of European Architecture and Pioneers of Modern Design, all of which are published in Penguin. He died in 1983.
