John Davies is a native of the Rhondda. He was educated at schools in Treorci, Bwlch-llan and Tregaron and at University College, Cardiff, and Trinity College, Cambridge. His wife comes from Blaenau Gwent, and they have two daughters and two sons. Until recently he was a member of the Department of Welsh History at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Warden of Neuadd Pantycelyn. He now lives in Cardiff. His other publications include Cardiff and the Marquesses of Bute, Broadcasting and the BBC in Wales and The Making of Wales. His latest book is A History of Wales (Penguin, 2006)
